I, the Governor in and over the State of Tasmania and its Dependencies in the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Executive Council, make the following regulations under the Vehicle and Traffic Act 1999 .

1.   Short title

These regulations may be cited as the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Amendment (Trade and Number Plates) Regulations 2001 .

2.   Commencement

These regulations take effect on 1 January 2002.

3.   Principal Regulations

In these regulations, the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2000 are referred to as the Principal Regulations.

4.    Regulation 89 amended (Return of number plates or trade plate after cancellation or expiry, &c.)

Regulation 89 of the Principal Regulations is amended as follows:
(a) by omitting from subregulation (2)(a) "14 days" and substituting "3 months";
(b) by omitting from subregulation (3) "14 days" and substituting "3 months".

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the regulation)

These regulations extend, from 14 days to 3 months, the period within which the following plates are required to be returned to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles:
(a) number plates from a vehicle that has ceased to be registered (other than seasonally);
(b) trade plates that have expired without renewal or been cancelled.
