Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Amendment Regulations 2018
I, the Governor in and over the State of Tasmania and its Dependencies in the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Executive Council, make the following regulations under the Vehicle and Traffic Act 1999 .

These regulations may be cited as the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Amendment Regulations 2018 .
These regulations take effect on the day on which their making is notified in the Gazette.
In these regulations, the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2010 are referred to as the Principal Regulations.
4. Regulation 58 amended (Registration period)
Regulation 58(3)(b) of the Principal Regulations is amended by omitting "4" and substituting "2".
5. Regulation 137A inserted
After regulation 137 of the Principal Regulations , the following regulation is inserted in Part 9:137A. National heavy vehicle number plate fee
(1) This regulation applies in respect of a number plate issued for a heavy vehicle that is registered otherwise than on one or more conditions.(2) A national heavy vehicle number plate fee is payable for the issue, or replacement, of a number plate or a set of number plates for a vehicle to which subregulation (1) applies.(3) For the financial year ending 30 June 2019, the national heavy vehicle number plate fee is $25.(4) In any subsequent financial year, the amount of the fee is to be calculated by multiplying $25 by the relevant indexation factor.(5) The relevant indexation factor for a fee in a particular financial year is the Australian CPI number for the December quarter immediately preceding that financial year.(6) In this regulation –Australian CPI number, for a particular quarter in a financial year, means the Consumer Price Index, weighted average of eight capital cities for that quarter, published by the Australian Statistician under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905 of the Commonwealth.
6. Schedule 1 amended (Fees)
Schedule 1 to the Principal Regulations is amended as follows:(a) by omitting items 21 and 22 and substituting the following:

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These regulations amend the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2010 to provide for the introduction of a fee for a nationally consistent number plate for heavy vehicles and to provide for a common expiry date for the registration of vehicles in a fleet of 2 or more.
