I, the Governor in and over the State of Tasmania and its Dependencies in the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Executive Council, make the following regulations under the Jury Act 1899 .

1.   Short title

These regulations may be cited as the Jury (Exemption) Regulations 2002 .

2.   Commencement

These regulations take effect on 1 January 2003.

3.   Classes or descriptions of persons exempt from serving as jurors

For the purposes of section 7A of the Jury Act 1899 , the following are prescribed as the classes or descriptions of persons who are exempt from serving as jurors:
(a) shift workers engaged in operating regular passenger transport services in –
(i) the cities of Hobart, Launceston, Glenorchy or Burnie; or
(ii) a suburban area of any such city;
(b) persons engaged, as a full-time occupation, in the operation of the State Emergency Service;
(c) persons engaged, as a full-time occupation, in the operation of fire brigade services or ambulance services;
(d) persons who are first officers or brigade chiefs of volunteer fire brigades;
(e) persons engaged, as a full-time occupation, in the operation of hospital services or medical services;
(f) persons engaged, as a full-time occupation, in civil defence services in a coordinating capacity;
(g) authorised officers and facilitators, within the meaning of the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act 1997 ;
(h) detention centre managers, facilitators and youth justice workers appointed or employed for the purposes of the Youth Justice Act 1997 ;
(i) persons permanently employed on night duty in any occupation;
(j) persons engaged, as a full-time occupation, in the operation of vessels making regular sea voyages of a greater distance than 30 kilometres;
(k) persons engaged in carrying on business on their own behalf otherwise than as partners or associates of any other person or persons;
(l) persons engaged in carrying on business as funeral directors;
(m) ministers of religion, within the meaning of the Marriage Act 1961 of the Commonwealth;
(n) members of religious orders;
(o) justices of the peace;
(p) persons who receive from the Commonwealth invalid pensions payable on account of their permanent blindness.
